My Girlies

My Girls

My husband travels during the week and it is usually impossible for him to travel with us on spring break trips and over school holidays. As the children get older and school vacation schedules become more difficult to coordinate, I thought about taking the girls on a mother daughter trip. I hope these trips will become a tradition and some of my daughters’ most treasured memories as they get older.  I think we will learn so much about each other and share wonderful times together.

I would think that advance planning is particularly important, this is something we are going to have to work on, planning is not easy with teenagers (Help Jill!! she is our oldest)and pretty good at planning outings, I’m sure she will have input and help plan our mother daughter trip.

Rosie, Jill, Giovanna

Here are a few ideas I’m thinking will work for planning a great mother/daughter bonding trip:

Something Short – for our first mother/daughter trip, I’m thinking we could start out by planning a weekend getaway or a relatively short day trip. Two of my girls are teenagers and just adore spending time with me! (of course that is an out-and-out lie!!) And we have an older daughter that has come home recently she is the bridge between the two younger ones and my husband and I. So…………where to start??

Choose The Right Place –  Pick something that is exciting for all of us. Selecting a destination where we can explore shared interests, create a schedule that will work for us, and possibly experience something new together. Making sure to involve my darling daughters in planning the trip and encouraging them to research ideas online. Spending time together in a new environment will hopefully bring out a shared spirit of adventure and discovery.

Budget In Advance – This can certainly be a factor when planning a trip with a teen especially my little princesses. We will have to have an honest discussion about money issues in advance rather than waiting until I have to say “no” to something my daughters want to do. Discussing things like accommodations, dining options, attractions, and shopping are a must!

Try to figure out a “Special Activity”– Including a special activity or event would make this mother/daughter trip particularly meaningful. This will have to be built around shared interests that will make memories or offer new perspectives on each other.  This might include seeing a live television show or Broadway play. My daughters love doing “girly” things,  so maybe mother/daughter spa treatments?? I will try to find out what would be an “amazing”  thing to do.

Don’t have any expectations– I would love to think that we will laugh and enjoy every moment together but honestly relationship issues will probably surface, and those heart-to-heart chats might never occur. That’s okay, I want to take it as comes and go with the flow. Despite the fact that I’m going with two hormonal teenagers this may be the best trip we have ever had.

Creating Memories – I would love to take a great camera with us, my daughter Giovanna is a great photographer and I think that we can create a great memory book to document our day or days. I know that Rosaria is not shy in front of a camera and  Jill is certainly photogenic.  I would treasure it forever.

Where to go what to do????

Choosing the right destination for our mother/daughter getaway is the most important part of the planning process. One of the interests we all share are horses the other is shopping and arts. So maybe NYC for a day or weekend of fun, shopping and a play???

NYC My Home – New York City has all the right stuff for a perfect mother/daughter getaway. I’m from Queens and we go home from time to time to visit family, but we always try to go into the city.  In Times Square, you can get half-price tickets for a Broadway play. I signed up for tickets to the Rachael Ray Show (not sure that will pan out) or we can take a movie location tour with On Location Tours, go shopping in SoHo, cruise by the Statue of Liberty with Circle Line or take a ride on “The Beast,” visit the Empire State Building and the Natural History Museum, go biking in Central Park, and so much more. If we plan on visiting a number of attractions, purchasing a New York City Citypass could save us a few dollars.

I think we have a plan, now to sell this to the girls…………….. Stay tuned, hopefully we will post some pictures!!!!

Candice Olson - Love Her!!!

Ok so here we are February 2012 (Happy Valentine!!) and I am working on new colors and finishes. I am loving neutrals again, returning from the deep jewel tones to the lighter and brighter spaces that lift us up and make us feel as if we are new and crisp! I am still loving the Blues, such  a soothing color and wanting to use it paired with taupe and grey tones. Using color on trim to create a focal point or frame for the room. I just viewed a video for Certa Pro (who I have been working with) and loving the use of dark trim in this space http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fB4aZMKWzi4

Here are other pictures from rooms that are giving me inspiration this year.  I loved working with textures and colors. Some of the finishes that I have enjoyed are grisaille murals (monochrome grey colors), chinoiserie,  layered damask finishes and stripping. Decorative Painting has been a passion for me for many years. Using decorative finishes can breathe life into plain spaces, almost making the walls come alive, giving them dimension and or texture!! Although you want to be sure that if you do a textured finish it is something your absolutely love, these types of finishes are usually for life and not for the faint of heart or person that changes their decor like we change our shoes. These finishes make a bold statement, but are somewhat permanent. Here we go…… tell me your favorite space! As always stay tuned…

Meaning “the flower of flowers,” tranquil ylang ylang is a calm, meditative yellow. Like the fragrance of the tropical Asian flower, this shade will relieve stress and anxiety.

Well it’s been a while since we’ve visited with Mother Theresa!! Sooooooo my sister Carol Ann (as Mother Theresa calls her) is my mother’s life line, I mean Mother Theresa cannot function if she doesn’t speak to my sister Carol Ann. Recently, Carol Ann had minor surgery on her knee, Well you would have thought it was a triple bypass . My poor mother was in tears!! At the hospital for her surgery the cast of family members was…. Carol’s daughter’s Lauren (my 1st niece, daughter to Carol, granddaughter to Mother Theresa, cousin to Giovanna and Rosaria, sister to two siblings Stefanie and Elizabeth, wife to Brian Draus) , my 2nd niece Stefanie (daughter to Carol, granddaughter to Mother Theresa, cousin to Giovanna and Rosaria, sister of two siblings Lauren and Elizabeth) Mother Theresa and yours truly Me, the other daughter from the same mother!!

We followed Carol Ann around from admission to recovery!! All of us, we support each other thru every moment of life no matter how monumental or insignificant. We are family (and Italian to boot). We sat we laughed, we waited and we went home. (Of course we ate and visited a wonderful new pastry shop in downtown Amsterdam called Dolci, for some cannolli and sfogliatelle in the interim!)

She was over my house Sunday, Dinner of course was wonderful!!  We did her laundry (an every Sunday chore) and washed set and placed her hair!!! Another every Sunday must!! Don’t you just love the white tear drop earings (probably Monet) !!! She is the greatest!!! So cute and Italian!!!

The newest contraption in Mother Theresa’s life is the Cellaphone, for all of us Americans its a cell phone but for Mother Theresa it’s a CELLAPHONE, you know, cousin to the Telephone!!Well as the story goes, the nursing home Mother Theresa just moved into, wanted a absorbent amount for a phone line so we just decided that we would give Mother Theresa a cell. She has poor eyesight so we programmed everyone’s number in 2-8 so she would have us all on speed dial. That is just the seven immediate people she needs to keep track of. This worked for a while, until from holding the phone in her hands she had pressed the function button on the side. The function that is assigned to the button is, The Verbal Command function!! Well this was an adventure that we will laugh about for many years, When she opens the flip phone it says “Say a command” well, lol, Mother Theresa was so upset, she calls me and says “What command does it want???, Every time I open this cellaphone its asking me for a command, what does it want from me!!”Well we were rolling on the ground! This is only the beginning of the story, I call Verizon and ask them if there is anyway she can use her home phonewith the large number pad? They were very helpful and gave me a device called “Verizon home phone connect”

This was great! I thought…….But nooooo!!!! she now says” I think I want the cellaphone back!”,  she likes the fact that the screen changes when she gets a phone call so she can tell if someone has called her! Another reason she wants to switch back to the CELLAPHONE is that she cannot work the speed dial on her home phone she keeps erasing the numbers OMMMMGGGG!!!! It’s always an adventure with Mother Theresa stay tuned to find out whether we keep the home phone or go back to the CELLAPHONE!

Today we sat outside and just enjoyed the deck!! It’s the weekend of July 4th, we are barbecuing  with friends, and then fireworks with the girls!! This begins a week of R & R (rest and relaxation)  for us, just a little getaway!!  The Northeast is almost etherial in summer. Its seems as if all of a sudden the days are long and warm, the air seems still and the blue of the sky and green of the trees just takes you in to its circle. It’s the Summer Style, casual, relaxed, light and airy!!

Do you have a summer style at home too?  It is equally casual, filled with cotton slip covers and toss pillows bold patterns and stripes.  All of these ingredients combine to fill the home with breezy effortless style.

Some ideas for outdoor spaces, if  your pressed for cash, use your porch to entertain or simply to read and relax, creating the proper  ambience is the key . Be sure to install the right lighting for evening  hours, and put up curtains or blinds to help filter the daytime sun. Invest in a carpet for your space to anchor the seating area, potted flowers or large outdoor plants give color and life to any space. Water fixtures are another great way to add ambiance and beauty to an outdoor setting. Although they can be pricey, you can actually make a water fixture for pennies on the dollar just by using a big planter, an electric fountain kit and a bag of pebbles. Geometric fabric in bold colors add a fun colorful element to the porch, There are endless possibilities with outdoor drapes and fabrics.
So kick back relax and Happy 4th of July!!!

What a great time, Summer! The way you feel when you get up and walk out to great the day, warm bright, relaxed!! Spending the afternoon with my girls by the pool, or weeding the garden. Great food, fresh heirloom tomatoes, the smell of fresh herbs just picked!! A super citrus cocktail that you enjoy as your friends come to visit, that casual conversation and easy summer picnic, this is the essence of summer to me!  One of my favorite summer cocktail is a Bellini. Cocktails don’t have to be full of sugary mixers or heavy ingredients. Integrate your summer fruit or garden herbs in with your cocktail recipes for some light and refreshing summer fun!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 (16-ounce) bag frozen peaches, thawed
  • 1 teaspoon grated orange peel
  • 1 (16-ounce) bag frozen strawberries, thawed
  • 1 (16-ounce) bag frozen blueberries or blackberries, thawed
  • 4 to 6 (750-ml) bottles Prosecco or other sparkling wine, chilled
  • Fresh strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries, for garnish
  • Orange peel twists, for garnish

Directions

Stir the sugar and water in a large saucepan over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Cool completely.

Puree the peaches and orange peel in a blender with 1/2 cup of the sugar syrup until smooth. Strain through a fine-meshed strainer and into a bowl. Cover and refrigerate. In a clean blender puree the strawberries with 1/3 cup of the sugar syrup until smooth. Strain through a clean fine-meshed strainer and into another bowl. Discard the seeds. Puree the blueberries in a clean blender with 1/3 cup of the sugar syrup until smooth. Strain through a clean fine-meshed strainer and into a third bowl. Discard the seeds and solids. Pour each of the purees into clear glass bowls or small pitchers.

For each serving, pour 2 to 4 tablespoons of the desired fruit puree into a Champagne flute. Slowly pour enough Prosecco into the flute to fill. Gently stir to blend. Garnish with the whole berries, as desired, and serve.

Do-Ahead Tip: The fruit purees can each be made 1 day ahead. Cover separately and refrigerate

So go ahead relax!!  No schedules, no appointments, no clients,  experience every moment live, love, laugh….

A quick note today for all of you Marshalls shoppers or are you a TJ Maxx Maxamista? These stores are just a great resource any time you need something!!! My friend Mary Korzinski just amazes me with how she can accessorize a room with a MARRSALLLS run!! Last years showhouse was proof of that, she needed some additional pillows and came back with an amazing finds!!

There are a few other stores that make my list. If I’m looking for a piece of furniture to do, or add to a design, I go to a couple of local thrift stores or used furniture stores like Salvation Army, or Goodwill another of my favorites Pier 19 Outlet in the Watt St. in Schenectady NY at the Watt St shopping plaza ,  also in that plaza is Tuesday Mornings, another good resource, I actually found some great items for this year’s showhouse room.

There are plenty of people who don’t think about shopping thrift stores.  It may be that they dislike or are afraid of used goods, or their local thrift location has useless junk.  Most thrift stores have unusable items, but I’ve  scored a few finds in thrift stores that could be resold for hundreds of dollars. When I shared a space in Vintage Chic Furniture I found an Empire Dresser for $9.99. The owner of Vintage Chic Furniture worked a little magic with some blue paint, and WELL-LA, she sold this beautiful piece for $395!!

(not the actual dresser ,just a google image as an example of Empire Dresser style)

It all depends on the particular thrift store, they’re all so very different.  Some ideas for successful thrift store shopping are:

Set out shopping with an idea of what you’re looking for.   Once you have found a great thrift store, stay focused!!!!! You can quickly get side tracked and your trip will turn into a shopping spree were you wind up with pricey things that you didn’t want, and you’ve brought home things you don’t really need.  Before you start shopping at any store, remember what you’re there for.  Stay focused on your needs and your budget.

Find out when they are having a sale!  Your local thrift store has sale days, plan show up early.   Where I live, the local salvation army gets donations in every Monday or Tuesday so I always try to stop in to see what’s new.  My niece Lauren loves Goodwill in Amsterdam, she has expanded her wardrobe considerably.  She’s found many designer labels and even items that are brand new and have never been worn, you just never know what you’ll find!

Hitting the jackpot, Finding the FIND……..  Shopping a thrift stores or junk stores can be hit and miss, and you never know what you’ll find inside, it just depends on a given day.  For me,  the most exciting and rewarding part,  is searching through a pile junk to discover a great find.  It’s like a treasure hunt that keeps you returning to dig deeper.

Search every corner of a thrift store, you never know what has just come in.  Also, keep in mind that time is money.   Always consider the time and cost of refurbishing a piece.  If it is one that will need to be completely restored, stained or painted, factor in that time and energy into the purchase price. I have waited a few days if I wasn’t sure that I wanted to pay the amount originally listed, and when I returned  a few days or a week later I’ve found items marked down!! If it was meant to be, it will be there for the price you want to pay!  Look for signs of quality construction, like solid wood and dovetail joints. Sometimes the runners on drawers are damaged, or bottoms need to be replaced or fixed if they have warped, they can be repaired just make sure your aware.

Use common sense! Leave Now!  Before I enter a thrift store I know what I’m searching for if  I see absolutely nothing I could use I leave!n I (try to) resist the urge to buy something and bring it home if I know it will not have a purpose.  I’m am an avid thrifter and my clients know it, so I always have a list of things I’m looking for, for me or for them. If I don’t see it, I walk out and come back to shop another day.

Beware of dirty items!    My friend Cathy owns a pest control company and  bed bugs, mites, or strange odors should send up a red flag.  This concern is legitimate, as outbreaks of bedbugs in many urban areas, are on the rise, so always take precautions.  If you bring home fabric, be sure wash it in hot water to kill any germs.  Resist the urge to buy anything upholstered you’ll sleep or sit on unless you plan to have it professionally cleaned or upholstered before you bring it into your home, and examine every piece of furniture for any signs of infestations.  If your furniture fine has an odor, you can use baking soda, white vinegar, witch hazel, Borax, and Murphy’s Oil Soap all help neutralize odors.

Leave the Children at home!  Plan ahead, make a play date or get a sitter if your budget allows that, children have no patience.  You want to be able to move quickly and accomplish your goal or find the treasure you’ve set out to look for.

The barter system.  Never be afraid to ask for a lower price.  Talk to the owner or manager, don’t waste your time with a clerk working in the store.  If you shop at a certain location regularly, chances are they will give you a discount.  Ask and you shall receive, start out low and go up from there. Get to know your shop owners,  When they see you, they will know that you are a serious buyer, they will remember you and sometimes give you a better deal.

Use your creativity!    Look past the finish if its rough, try to visualize the piece with a great finish or paint color.   Whenever I enter a thrift store, I see things for what they could become, not what they are.  Take the coffee table I recently blogged about.   This table had potential to be a completely amazing table !

Most thrift stores are for charity and are run by churches, but, many thrift stores like Goodwill or Salvation Army actually exist to raise money for their organization.  Buying an item from these establishments means that you are helping land fills from becoming full, and saving great pieces of furniture.  So when thinking about purchasing something to accent your home, look for the bargains and think thrifty!!!!

As always, stay tuned ……………

XOXO

Well we’ll just see about that !!! I definitely need some help so I enlist my daughter to aid her mother in this endeavor. Giovanna my older cherub and I decided to start with channel 1067, Exercise on Demand on a Tuesday evening.  Looking at the menu our first question was “what do we want to do?” Giovanna immediately takes the TV  remote control and starts scrolling through the categories BELLY DANCING!! Wholly Cow….. what in the world is she thinking???? I’m gonna feel stupid, can I keep up??  I’m 48 Years Young!! Can I really do this?? Silly question, of course I can! It’s just exercise.

Thank God we decided to go with something less intimidating. We started on Buns and Thighs! This was only a 12 minute workout, and so we started the workout,  IT WAS AWESOME!! I was really doing great. I was thinking this may work  for me! Unfortunately, not so for Gi,  she was not so happy, after 4 minutes of loud work-out sounds, I hear a sigh of relief next to me, quickly followed by this statement “WHAT!!!! THAT WAS ONLY THE  WARM-UP!?”  OMG, this work out was not going the way she wanted it to , she could not keep up, she felt stupid, could not keep count and was utterly uncoordinated, about 9 minutes into the workout she reached for the remote, stopped the workout and went back to the menu. Okay,  I could definitely understand what she was feeling, not wanting to discourage our Mother Daughter Time I said Nothing! This time we decided to start with a beginner workout, it was simple calisthenics, we would be able to follow no problem. We started AGAIN,  It was great! I didn’t say much to her, in fear that I may lose my new workout partner, it was great being together and sharing time doing something healthy for ourselves!

We continued to do another workout ” Abs of steel”. This workout was a 12 minute work out we chose together, it looked easy and fast paced, Okaayy!!!!! We actually are spending time together!! Working out !!!!. Not one rude comment or roll of the eyes, my fifteen year old daughter was actually laughing with me! This was a day that will live in infamy!!!!  (Rosaria, our younger honey bunny decided not to join us, but I have hope she will in the future, and in retrospect it was probably best that she didn’t, I think she had beans for supper you know what they say……….beans beans the musical fruit!)

If I were to choose an exercise, it would be walking !!  I’ve tried to get my husband to go with me but…… he thinks walking will add only minutes to your life, he says the only benefit would be that it would enable you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $5000 per month. LOL. The only positive reason for long walks he says is ” when they are taken by people who annoy me.”  Trying my hand at humor,  I told him a story about Mother Theresa.   I said ” You know my mother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. Now she’s 97 years old and we don’t know where the heck she is.” (Just Kidding) !!

Yes, summer is right around the corner soooo… I should stick with this program, sharing time with my two girlies is the best benefit!!  I will leave you with a few thoughts to ponder:

Exercise is done against one’s wishes and maintained only because the alternative is worse”

“Even in a country like the USA where fitness has become an obsession, most people exercising do not seem to think it illogical to drive automobiles to gyms while doing their best to avoid walking”

Thoughts to ponder…………….

Diet slogan: TAKE CHARGE, DON’T BE LARGE.
–Daniel Worona

THOSE WHO GET TOO BIG FOR THEIR BRITCHES, WILL BE EXPOSED IN THE END.

HUMOR BUTTON: CAUTION: HUNGRY DIETER, MAY BITE IF PROVOKED

stay tuned………………….

What makes a Great Bedroom???? This is a question I’ve asked myself again and again. The answers, for me anyway are, ambiance that feeling of calmness, a personal sanctuary. The bedding, furniture, lighting it should be welcoming, a retreat. A place that will see you through a sleepless night, where you can close the doors and take a deep breath and destress…. A place you can have marathon reading sessions, even illness seems better in this place.

But, what is in a Sanctuary aka bedroom that gives it this feeling?? It should be luxurious, welcoming calming with comfortable seating. In my bedroom I have a Sam Moore chair and ottoman by the fireplace. Lighting, a beautiful chandelier on a dimmer, soft task lighting for reading and just relaxing. Soft colors on the walls that help soothe your eyes and bedding….The softest highest thread count you can afford, 400 count sheets are priced so reasonably, goose down pillows, and down definitely down comforter….ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh blisssssss…

Just some pictures to help translate what I mean:
