This recently completed master bath renovation was in a newly built home. The owners were happy with the layout of the bathroom but, wanted to punch it up a bit! The master bathroom should be your sanctuary, as stylish as it is soothing. We wanted to turn the existing bath into something unique.

I’ve rounded up a stunning way to create the dream bath that they would love being in. This bathroom was to be transformed into a peaceful escape reserved for the masters of the house.  With stunning tile work, soft fabrics and a calming color palette blend to form a decadent space designed for relaxation.

I started wall a gorgeous tile, the moment I saw this glass tile I knew.. this was perfect. And I was right, the owners squealed with excitement when I presented my ideas and finishes.

We chose a white glass tile, Jeweled j-603 in diamond white: The combination of finishes on the sheet of tile are clear glass,  wavy glass, frosted glass and marble,  it is exquisite.Jewel tile

The countertop, I used is  Cambria: Berwyn, this silver flecked stone adds a soft yet glamorous touch to this master bath.

Cambria-Berwyn

The Delta Vero Lavatory Faucets with waterfall spout, gives the right touch of sophistication to this charming master bath without breaking the budget.

I took the bathroom mirror and lighting under the microscope to show how this bath accessory can change the ambience of your bathroom. Remember the main task of lighting in the bath, both direct and indirect is to caress and compliment you.

What do you think about illuminated mirrors? I used the LED Strip lights to back light the mirrors in this design, providing illumination as well as visual style above the vanity’s white under-mount sinks and quartz countertops.

IMG_6886

Two glass jeweled pendants hang above the double vanity adding a bit more interest and an elegant look.  Its tailored, not to girly for a man, and has a upscale feel in a restrained way.

IMG_6883

The lighted mirrors are remote controlled to fade to different colors and also soften or brighten with a touch.  The darker wood cabinets provide a subtle contrast with the lighter tiled floor.

“It is a very luxurious spa like experience in this bathroom” the homeowners said when the project was completed.

It’s the details that give this Master suite a luxurious touch. I was hoping to create the sense of a 5 star hotel, it’s very important I think, that is  the experience you have when you walk into this space. This space is serene and peaceful, you have the same experience in the master bedroom.

To visually connect the master suite each room plays off the colors and fabrics of the last space. Though they’re usually hidden behind closed doors, master bathrooms deserve to be as thoughtfully decorated as your home’s living spaces.

As always, stay tuned for more Adventures in Styleland!

Layering patterns involves four main elements: color, scale, shape and texture. If you’re like me and you fall in love with four times the amount of fabric you need at a showroom, you’ll need to go through some major editing. First up is color. Lay all your possible choices out on the floor and if certain ones look a hot mess and just don’t play well with others, remove them from the mix right away. It’s kinda like kicking an obnoxious reality cast member off the island after an elimination challenge but with fibers and weaves versus emotions and bad behavior.

Here’s an example of a great color edit. Notice how each of the fabrics sports different shades of a common color, blue? This is what you ultimately want; the varying intensities lead to an evolved, effortless look. Something else that’s happening here is a great mix of shapes going in different directions.

I borrowed this picture below from Ballard Designs.

Traditional

A traditional rug doesn’t have to define your space. Add in updated prints and colors pulled from the rug for a wonderful eclectic look.

1.) Carlson Rug
2.) Claire Gray
3.) Felicity Spa
4.) Lorenzo Charcoal
5.) Bark Twill
6.) Danish Linen Oatmeal
7.) Natural Microfiber, Bark Twill, Indochine Stone

8.) Kravet Indochine Ikat Stone

Traditional Layering

Contemporary

Keep a monochromatic color scheme interesting with great patterns that play well together and fabrics with tonal texture, like Kravet’s Scandicci Gray.

1.)Kravet Indochine Ikat Stone
2.) Kravet Toscana Ikat Slate
3.) Lorenzo Charcoal
4.) Asha Pewter
5.) Danish Linen Tea
6.) Scandicci Gray (Kravet)
7.) Panthea Rug (Gray)

Contemporary Layering

Add contrast. Once you have your main color selection down, in this case its Grey, add a bit of contrast. See the Suzanni fabric #4 with the gold and pewter.

Vary the scale. While color and shape are easier to get a grasp on, scale is a bit more complicated. There are three different sizes of scale: small, medium and large. When mixing prints, try not to choose more than one of the same scale size; multiple patterns of the same scale often result in a heap of Hodgepodge. The person who does this best is Betsy Burnham, if we were all as talented as this women the world would be pattern of loveliness!

The perfect mix. We’ve got a large-scale pattern sporting an orange suzanni pattern, a medium-scale blue plaid which is traditional, and the small scale cheater global animal print. The trio is also different directionally; the rug runs horizontally, in this ethnic/global zigzag like pattern. But all of these prints work well together!! Hopefully you can use some of these tips when putting together patterns in your home…

Driving to Appt.

I know I know, you just can’t handle the beauty in this photo!!! That is Denise Maurer, she’s a gorgeous redhead, but this lady is a force to be reckoned with! I’ve worked with this women for 4 years and she has shaped me into the woman I am today.

This extraordinary talented women could design circles around Bunny Williams and do before she even had a chance to move one piece of furniture or select a fabric in a space!

Jan Showers wishes she was half the lady Denise Maurer is!

This past Monday I had a Design Day at DMI.  For all you new readers, this usually occurs on Design Team Wednesdays, when Betsy Mattice joins the Adventure team. Lately Denise has been including me on daily client appointments, this means you settle in for a 5  or 8 hour, non-stop Design yenta-fest! Which includes a quick-lunch and if your lucky a glass of wine at the end of the day to discuss notes and design choices for clients.

We began this day at the DMI office, (photo enhanced space may appear larger in photo)

Making sure all of the fabric memo’s had arrived for the clients Kitchen and Family Room. Then looking for color choices for shutters in the Bedroom along with shade colors for windows and the Patio door .

Denise gave me a crash course (Learning this program to be continued at a later date) on Minutes Matter, a Program that lets you incorporate fabric choices, and actual photos of your clients space and design the window treatment so you can give them a visual of the actual design!  Oh, I’m sorry, did you think that was it? Ha! That was just the before we left the office at 12:30!

And we’re off, first stop, drop off Dakota (Denise’s grandson who helps with IT work at the office for a summer job).

On to our next stop to drop off a dual flush toilet that was delivered to The DMI office instead of the client location by mistake. Denise is lifting these boxes like they were air. (Take that Martha Stewart, and you thought jail was tough!) As we dropped off the correct toilet, we picked up the incorrect product and loaded it into the vehicle. This is where you have to say “If it can happen, it will” when dealing with construction projects, somehow mistakes get made, but this was one big flush!

We are finally ready to head to the client appointment (Denise in beautiful white pants not a mark them from our previous stops).

Our mission today was a success,  4 rooms in this family home on their way to being embellished in bold new colors and prints, all it takes are a few simple changes to breathe life into familiar space.

Always thinking outside the style box Denise has a confidence to try bold trends and mix finishes bringing a broader interpretation of design styles. There is no longer a need to place styles in fixed categories like “traditional”, “rustic”, “industrial” or “country.”  I think Homes in 2014 will represent an eclectic array of stylistic influences. Picking items that speak to you individually will keep you from conforming to a rigid or overdone look.

Well that’s it for today, Stay tuned for another Adventure in Styleland! Stay Tuned…

Ending on that note!

Green Interiors

Green Interiors

This life is short, but very, very sweet. I’ve been dealing with a couple issues in my life recently, Mother Theresa passing, my daughter Giovanna leaving for college and taking on a job in an office, to help with college tuition for Gi. The office is nice, the girls are so sweet, (well, most of them) and the Gentleman who owns the business is young , good-looking, a talanted surgeon and a great guy!

But I’m missing my design friends! well to be quite honest, I miss being up on the ladder, in the middle of my designs, with the noisy construction workers that I just can’t leave alone, because I constantly have to put my 2 cents in !!  I miss Wednesdays at Denise Maurer Interiors, with Betsy Mattice and Patty Miller, but most of all I miss sitting at my computer during the day and taking a few minutes to blog to you and share my projects, ideas and news about whats got my attention in the Design World!!

I’m rethinking taking on this extra job, its taking me away from my first love, Design so maybe just working harder at my current business will bring in the extra cash for Giovanna’s education! Some new ventures have come my way, one is a great women I met through the internet. I am looking forward to meeting Carol from Green Interiors in person. She is a client that has opened a Green Design store in MA. The name is Green Interiors! She is coming to my neck of the woods for a couple of hours to meet with me and see my workroom (which is pretty impressive if I say so myself) .  We have been talking by phone for a couple of months and I have enjoyed our early morning conversations, starting our days off sharing ideas and working together to get projects on track,  and collaborating on designs. I can’t wait to meet her, I know we’ll hug and get right down to business.  No chatting about the weather and good local shopping.  We’ll get straight to the heart of things…our faith, our businesses, our families, our journeys, our struggles, our dreams for the future.   Conversations like that are good for the soul.  It’s amazing the kind of connections that are formed through this crazy social media and blog world.

Well, I’ve learned that when you meet internet friends, you bring a gift, so I’m bringing her one of my amazing bags made of vintage fabric. that my friend Kitty makes. I can’t wait to see if this Adventure will bring me back to Styleland full-time!

As Always, Stay tuned….

Autumn, a season of timeless elegance, let mother natures seduce you with her charm. The month of October, crisp morning air and colors so alive with change, familiar surroundings don a rustic palate of jewel tones that dazzle you with their beauty. It’s time for long walks and late night talks with our children by the fire. This is truly my favorite season, here is a quote from Anne Mary Lawler:

The fields are harvested and bare,

and Winter whistles through the square.

October dresses in Flame and gold

Like a woman afraid of growing old.

Here, in my home are some signs of the season I’d like to share..

Our front door is always open welcoming our family and friends.  Many people celebrate the autumn season by decorating their front porch. Pumpkins, cornstalks, pilgrims and other traditional autumn décor start making their appearance, welcoming guests into the home and delighting those who pass by.

Inside my humble abode I was undecided this year whether I wanted to paint pumpkins go au naturel or spray paint them in metallic silvers and golds. I decided to stay true to the harvest season and use the different varieties and colors that nature offered. Here are two different groupings:

Love the Cinderella pumpkin in the urn!! The orange gourds are surprisingly versatile decorative items, especially when  displayed in groups. Before you put away the urns and pots that held your summer  flowers on the front porch, use them as a base for your larger pumpkins,  and add elegance to your display.

Just loving the pumpkins and mum, the lovely yellows and reds together are great, but I’m leaning more towards the horse and urn above rather than the grouping of various pumpkins below. Which arrangement would you use?? Post your comments for me, I’d love to hear from you!

Although this grouping of pumpkins in sizes and colors is appealing!! Above our entry, I used some fall garland and floral arrangements, gourds and a beautiful blue Hubbard squash (that will be eaten after the holiday!!), this array of color will great me in the morning as I descend from my bedroom to discover yet another glorious fall day!

Let us then, be up and doing

with a heart for any fate;

Still achieving, still pursuing,

learn to labor and to wait..

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Inspiration!! This was written more than a hundred years ago, this wisdom is as relevant today as when it was penned, Longfellow’s advice if you’ll receive it, is an emotional and spiritual boost  “let us then be up and doing” he is telling celebrate each day!

You definitely know what season it is when you walk into my dining room, I think decorating for the season is far from a trend — it’s tradition.

It’s something that people have been doing for years, and they are going to keep doing it because they want to feel the seasons and they enjoy celebrating the holidays using seasonal items for fall, from several pumpkin variations to represent harvest, to seasonally colored throws, pillows and mantle pieces,  — it’s all about the color. Colors are identified for the seasons. In the fall you start to see more blacks, browns, reds, oranges and onyx. And decorating doesn’t have to be costly or time-consuming, you want to accessorize for the season and then build it up — it can become a layered process. You can easily and effortlessly update your home without breaking the bank,  get a new throw, add a couple of pillows, and then start adding your holiday decorations as they come.

Some welcoming front doors and holiday arrangements that I wanted to share with you:

I’ll end with this photo of my entry, I really like the urn, I think… hope this was a fun-filled fall adventure!!!

Happy Holidays!! Stay tuned…..

XOXO

If you really want something special and unique in your home than decorative painting is the way to go. In many Designer showhouses you’ll find the work of talented artists that use decorative painting techniques.

The origin of decorative paint is unknown, it has been seen as far back as cave paintings. The greatest influence has been the early Christian or church art, frescoes that were first found in roman catacombs. Folk art then started and decorative painting began to have a revival in the 1940’s and 50’s. It has also been popular in countries like Scandinavia, particularly Sweden, has a rich history of painted interiors and furniture. In England and France, the country tradition was less strong but, it is from here that some of the finest works in the classical tradition emerged.. Chinoiserie lacquer work, gilding, hand painting and faux finishes on walls and furniture all carried out in grand country houses and châteaux.

Chinoiserie

Here is a step by step process of a Grand Damask Pattern I did in a clients 2 story foyer.

This space originally started with a Waverly Wall Paper that was a colorful paisley pattern with blues, greens, pinks, and yellows. Quite bold and the home owner loved it for many years but remodeling her kitchen and updating the family room off the foyer, called for something more elegant with a transitional twist.

We decided to do a Stencil with a metallic layered damask and this was the start of our adventure:

Upper Foyer Landing, first layer BM af-305 Ylang Ylang

Supplies needed for this finish are:

Base Coat: Ben Moore Ylang Ylang AF-305

Ben Moore Metropolitan AF-690

Ben Moore Cotswald AF-150

Premixed Joint Compound

Modern Masters Metallic Paint: Silver (add an 10% Extender)

Lamp Black Acrylic

Faux Effects Aquacreme/Mastercreme

Faux Creme Colors Van Dyke Brown and Dark Brown

Tools: Japanese Trowel, Stencil brushes (large), chip brush and spray bottle

  1. Create 2 separate mixes of 1 to 1 ratio of paint and premixed joint compound using Ben Moore Aura Cotswald AF-150 and Metropolitian AF-690.
  2. Trowel Paint colors Randomly, with a vertical pattern, don’t overload your trowel with mixture.

Step 3: Joint compound mixed with Aura Cotswald AF150 and Metropolitan AF690 Second Layer

3.   Trowel second layer, using both colors again and working wet on wet. Use a spray bottle of water to spray surface, then apply causing mixture to drip lightly. Let dry.

4.  Stencil Grand Damask Motif randomly over the surface first with Modern Masters Silver.

Production Stencil, 2nd floor foyer, modern masters Silver metallic

5. Stencil additional Grand Damask motifs with Lamp Black, adding silver again over black here and there.

Adding Lamp Black with touch of silver, over Stairway, Whew!!

6. Thin the Metropolitan Joint Compound mixture 1 to 1 with water, using a chip brush apply this in  vertical drips from the top of the wall. Do this by loading the brush well and pressing it hard onto the surface to release the paint mixture. Allow to dry.

7. Mix Aquacreme glaze at a rate of 1 cup Aquacreme to 2 teaspoons each Vandyke and dark brown creme colors. Thin this with 1 to 1 water and apply in drips from top of wall to bottom with a large chip brush. Allow to dry slightly and spray with water, using the chip brush and additional glaze on spray water here and there to keep glaze open and make it drip more.

The glaze and van dyke brown mixed with dark brown push the stencil back and create a great strie on the walls giving an aged look to the walls.

The finished Foyer was Spectacular!! It had an aged appearance with a modern feel. Loved the look, and transformation! Just another adventure in Styleland, hope you enjoyed this one!

Stay tuned as always,

XOXO
